چکیده

Using imaging that shows four magnitudes of main sequence stars, we have discovered that the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1851 is surrounded by a halo that is visible from the tidal radius of 700 arcsec (41 pc) to more than 4500 arcsec (>250 pc). This halo is symmetric and falls in density as a power law of r. It contains approximately 0.1% of the dynamical mass of NGC 1851. There is no evidence for tidal tails. Current models of globular cluster evolution do not explain this feature, although simulations of tidal influences on dwarf spheroidal galaxies qualititively mimic these results. Given the state of published models it is not possible to decide between creation of this halo from isolated cluster evaporation, or from tidal or disk shocking, or from destruction of a dwarf galaxy in which this object may have once been embedded. 0 The Age of the Inner Halo Globular Cluster NGC 6652

HST (V, I) photometry has been obtained for the inner halo globular cluster NGC 6652. The photometry reaches ∼ 4 mag below the turn-off and includes a well populated horizontal branch (HB). This cluster is located close to the Galactic center at RGC ≃ 2.0 kpc with a reddening of E(V −I) = 0.15 ± 0.02 and has a metallicity of [Fe/H] ≃ −0.85. Based upon ∆V HB , NGC 6652 is 11.7 ± 1.6 Gyr old. Usi...

Ccd Photometry of Galactic Globular Clusters. Iv. the Ngc 1851 Rr Lyraes

The variable star population of the galactic globular cluster NGC 1851(C0512-400) has been studied by CCD photometry, from observations made in the B, V and I bands during 1993-1994. Light curves are presented for 29 variables, seven of which are new discoveries. The behavior of the RR Lyraes in the period-temperature diagram appears normal when compared to clusters which bracket the NGC 1851 m...

Unveiling Palomar 2: the Most Obscure Globular Cluster in the Outer Halo

We present the first color-magnitude study for Palomar 2, a distant and heavily obscured globular cluster near the Galactic anticenter. Our (V, V − I) color-magnitude diagram (CMD), obtained with the UH8K camera at the CFHT, reaches V (lim) ≃ 24 and clearly shows the principal sequences of the cluster, though with substantial overall foreground absorption and differential reddening. The CMD mor...

Contribution of White Dwarfs to Cluster Masses

I have undertaken a literature search through 1997 July 31 of white dwarfs (WDs) in open and globular clusters. I have tried to make a careful evaluation in each case of the likelihood that the object is a WD and that it is a cluster member. The results are presented for 13 open clusters and 11 globular clusters. Currently there are 36 single WDs and Ðve WDs in binaries known among the open clu...

Comparison between the Globular Clusters in Ngc 5128 and the Galaxy Globular

Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 the nearest giant elliptical galaxy are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the colormetallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters one finds that the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such me...
